Greenhouse gas-neutral electricity generation by 2035 – Comparison of instruments for phasing out natural gas (Greenhouse gas-neutral electricity generation)

Decarbonizing electricity generation is key to achieving national and European climate protection and energy supply goals. In this project, various instruments for greenhouse gas-neutral electricity generation will be identified, analyzed and evaluated. In particular, the project will examine which instruments can bring about a phase-out of natural gas-fired power generation and a fuel switch to renewable gases (especially hydrogen) by 2035 or 2040, and which are sensible from an energy industry perspective. A legal assessment of the various instruments based on German and European energy and constitutional law will also be prepared. The overall aim of the project is to identify the need for action and the options for action resulting from a faster implementation of the phase-out of coal and natural gas in Germany, which is necessary for climate protection.
